Elections
It's that time of year again. Nominations will be taken at the November meeting or via email over the next month and a half.
Voting will take place at the December meeting.
We will be voting for President, VP, Secretary, Tresaurer, Open Captains (women and men),
Masters Captain (Women and Men), and NYRR Club Council Rep.
In order to be informed on NYRR events and changes we need a rep to attend a meeting once a month.
Preferably the rep should work in the city instead of having to commute to and from for the meetings.
Please keep an open mind to running for a position.

Guest Speakers
Ed from Camp St. Edward food pantry came to thank us for our monthly donations. We also collected more money to give!
Josh Pesin came and spoke about the upcoming Rally for pedestrian walkways on the Verranzano Bridge. The rally is Saturday, October 18th.

Runner of the Month
Cheryl Bergeron is our runner of the month for September.
She competed in the Niagara Falls Barrelman Half Ironman.
She started off with a swim of 42:18 for 1.2 miles. She fell on the 56 mile bike ride, was treated by medical and still finished the ride in 3:55:27.
She battled through he 13.1 mile run in 2:12:51.
Way to tough it out Cheryl!

Please try to come up with good nominations for Runner of the Month!
Nominations can be emailed or done at the meeting.
After looking at nominations over the past 2 years, it appears that the same people are nominated (and chosen due to lack of nominations ) over and over!
This email goes out to over 120 people.
Please nominate someone or yourself! It doesn't have to be a PR or an age group award, just a good race.

Our next meeting is Monday, November 3rd.
Can't wait to see all those marathon runners on the stairs of the Manor House!

Donate to a Good Cause
John Chan runs the Boston Marathon every year.
Some of us have been fortunate enough to run Boston as one of his guides (you know since he can't see anything but the ladies).
This year he is running for a cause - the Team With A Vision charity.
It is raising money for the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
He is asking only for small donations (a race entry fee) to help a fellow runner out in pursing his or her dreams.
Most of the blind and visually impaired runners did not get a chance to finish last year due to the bombing and will your help they will get to cross the finish line this year
. No donation is too small.
John's fundraising website is
http://www.crowdrise.com/teamwithavision/fundraiser/johncjmc

Tommy's Bus There was a very poor response from both the Rockets and SIAC for Tommy's bus to the Brooklyn Triple Crown dinner.
Tommy expected 15-20 people and had only 6 people on the bus to Brooklyn. Please remember to keep your commitment to Tommy as the bus costs alot of money. We cannot assume that people not attending the meeting are going to take the bus just because they are attending the event.
I know we all appreciate Tommy's work in getting us buses. Lets make sure he doesn't lose any more money in the future.

January's Runner of the Month The first runner of the month for 2013 is Pete Blum. Pete did the Goofy Challenge in Disney this past month.

While training for the marathon, many participated in the SI Half.

Brigid Howley is our runner of the month.
Brigid ran an outstanding 1:50:03 - a four minute PR (personal record).

Jeff Benjamin is the August runner of the month, not because of what he did this month but because what he has done over 30 years.
Jeff is being inducted into the FIRST class of the College of Staten Island Athletics Hall of Fame. This is a huge honor.
Jeff was part of the Cross Country team from 1983-1987 and has been a top road racer on the Island. He has done so much for the running community including serving as President for that other club.
We are happy to have him as a Rocket now though. Congratulations Jeff! We all hope a speedy recovery for you as well.

Need Volunteers
We need volunteers to help with the scoring of the SITRAC Boardwalk Mile, Kids 1/2 mile, and 2.5 race. It is August 18th. Volunteers would need to be there at 8:30 am and be expected to stay until noon.
We also need volunteers for the CISF Grand Finale in Coney Island on Sunday, Sept 9th.
Please realize the race scoring is a vital part of fundraising for our scholarship. If you have not volunteered at a race yet, please try to get to one of these and help out.

Halloween Race Committee Meeting
There will be a race committee meeting Thursday, Sept 6th at 6 pm at the Manor House. We will discuss the race and preparations during dinner. The race is scheduled for Sunday, Oct 28th.

Runner of the Month
John Chan is July's Runner of the Month.
John ran 5 races in July. He ran 1:11:56 for the Boilermaker 15k, 50:59 for the Queens 10k, 23:14 while Partying with Purpose in Hoboken for a 5k, and 22:51 for the Westfield Pizza Run 5k.
His most impressive race by far was the Arielle Newman 5 miler.
This is a tough 5 miles and he ran 37:03 which is 7:25 pace. Word on the street is that he beat John Gonzalez in four 800s at the track workout.
Looks like John Chan is healthy again - WATCH OUT! Congrats on a great month John.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, September 6th due to Labor Day. Hope to see you soon.

Join the Party! Race starts at 7pm. I created a Richmond Rockets team with myself as the team captain. You can sign up as a team member.
Here is the link to sign up: http://www.active.com/running/hoboken-nj/7-17-12---pwp-hoboken-5k-2012

Long Runs, Track Workouts, and Tommy's Speed Runs
Now that the races are coming to an end, it's a good time to concentrate on training.

Sundays - Long Runs - 8am at Clove Lakes Parking Lots. Lots of people are beginning to train for the marathon and half-marathon. Come for a group run! It's way better than running alone.

Tuesdays - Track Workouts - 6:30pm at CSI - Everyone needs a little speedwork no matter what you are training for.

Thursdays - Tommy's Summer Speed Series - 7 pm at vClove Lakes A great time to get a tempo run in.

Scholarship
The money was sent out to the colleges for our Scholarship Award Winners. Thanks again to those on the scholarship commitee and to all those who volunteered to help us raise money via scoring and the Halloween Race. Thanks also to all those who sold raffle tickets. We have already begun to fundraise for next year's scholarships. We scored Cosme's race last week. We will be scoring to raise money for the scholarship but we revisited how else we should raise funds. It was voted to keep all of our methods. Besides scoring,we will be doing our Super 50/50 raffle, use the profits from the Halloween Race, put all 50/50 from meetings into the scholarship, and 10% of our years end balance. Also, a fundraiser at RollerJam is a possibility.

Volunteers for the Ironman US Championships in NY/NJ
I received an email asking if the club would like to volunteer at this amazing event. Not too often would you get an opportunity to see something like this in person. If we get a good group together it would be lots of fun and we could raise some money as well. They will pay the club for a group of volunteers. It is Saturday, August 11th. Please email me if you are interested.

Update on Darlene
Darlene went for a very important test Tuesday July 3rd. Please keep her and her family in your prayers. She will be starting her chemo treatment next week.
Darlene is very grateful for all the little cards she has received from fellow Rockets.
She said they are helping to keep her spirits up and to keep them coming! Darlene has put together a team for the Breast Cancer Walk in October at Clove Lakes.
She would like our support there.
It is Sunday, October 21st. Here is the website to donate to or sign up for Darlene's team for Making Strides:
Click here to donate or sign up!
The team name is The Dollface Divas.
Darlene's sister is the team captain.

Tee Shirts and Singlets
As the previous email said, I have all sizes now for tees and singlets. Singlets are $25. Email me and I will bring them to a race, a workout, or a long run for you.

June's Runner of the Month
So it looks like I am the Runner of the Month for June. Here is a few words from Brigid Howley II
We have a fabulous runner of the month who deserves a little recognition...that would be our Presidente!!!! Patricia Mulligan....
While there weren't that many road races on Staten Island this month, Patricia certainly showed us her strength and endurance when she ran a solid race in Jeff's Run when she finished in 21:09 for 5k (6:49 pace) 14th place woman.
She also finished 5th in both Luke's Run (21:23 for 3 miles) and the March of Dimes 5k (24:50 for 5k).
While I am sure that many of us know that there were other races to be run, Patricia was busy either volunteering (for instance Cosme's Run) or coaching her 5th place city champ team!!!!!
Do we sense a lucky number here Rockets???? Oh yeah!!!! So congrats to our president!
I am sure that we all hope she continues the great work that she always does as a runner, leader, and coach!
Thank You Patricia Mulligan

Our next meeting is Monday, August 6th but I hope to see you before that at a long run, a track workout, or one of the races.

Trish

Darlene Vigliotti has resigned as secretary (for now) due to medical reasons. She needs to concentrate on her and her family right now. Please respect their privacy and keep Darlene and Tony in your thoughts and prayers. Darlene has volunteered for just about every race the Rockets have been involved with over the past couple of years. She has requested that Rockets help Joe Busso especially with Tommy's Runs on Thursday nights. We are gonna need some volunteers to replace her. She has done alot for our club. Thank you to Nancy Wagner-Wetzel for stepping up and volunteering to be our secretary for the remainder of the year.

Guest Speakers
We had two guest speakers - Mike Tobin and Faye Dilgen.
Faye is trying to organize a Disney Marathon weekend trip to support the Jackson Gabriel Silver Foundation for Epidermolysis Bullosa (www.jgsf.org). They need to secure 30 spots in the half or full marathon for the weekend of Jan 11th. Registration entitles the runner to 40% park pass discounts, discounted hotels, and a Disney 20th anniversary commemorative pin. If anyone is interested in joining this team and running for this cause please email Faye at kalilla@aol.com.

Mike Tobin was looking for Rocket support to help him with the Six Hour Race. With the Rockets and the running community's support Mike will be contesting this fantastic event again this September.

Runners of the Month
The competition was stiff this month. So much so that we needed to select 2 women as runners of the month.
Congratulations to Nancy Wagner-Wetzel and Ruthann Shirley to a great month of running. Nancy and Ruth both ran the Brooklyn Half.
Ruth had a time of 1:58:56 and teamed up with Barbara Byrne and Diane Greco and the Women's Master team finish 6th among many teams. Nancy ran 2:11:21. On Memorial Day Ruth was 1st in her age group with a time of 33:42 and Nancy was 2nd in her age group with a time of 36:50. Nancy was just getting started though. She then ran the Wall St Run on Thursday and finished 1st in her age group. And she was 2nd in her age group at the Dolan Run on Sunday morning and 2nd in her age group at the Belmont on Sunday evening. WOW! Congrats ladies.

The next meeting will be Monday July 2nd. See you at the races!

As for the past several years, we voted to sponsor two holes at this Golf Outing. The foundation helps students pay for school activities such as graduation fees, prom dresses, SAT costs, college apllication costs, new running sneakers for a member of the track team.
These students might not have been able to participate in these activities without the foundations help.

Runner of the Month
TBD - if you would like to nominate someone, email me back. No nominations were made at last night's meeting

The next meeting will be Monday, October 3rd. I hope to see you there. Bring nominations!

Dena's son Billy has had Neuroblastoma for 2 years. He has had several rounds of chemo and a few surgeries and is only 4 years old. We are asking for all the Rockets support at this race. More race details will follow.
The tentative date is Sat, Oct 22nd at Clove Lakes Park. It is an excellent organization. For more info you can go to their website www.awoccf.org

Mark Vogt (SIAC President) and Phil Jonas came as well to promote the S.I.Sprint Challenge at Corporal Thompson Park. They are looking for the fast running club members out there to compete (100m and 4x400) and for volunteers to help with the youth races as well. If you are interested please let me know. Tom Kelly also spoke to promote the Celic Run on Sept 3rd and the fundraiser on Thursday, August 25th at Nurenberger Bierhaus. Both events are alot of fun!

Softball Game
We have had 2 games against SIAC and we each have a win. A deciding game will be held to determine the true winner. The first game was a 7-2 loss for the Rockets. The second game we crushed SIAC 7-0. A good time was had by all. Thanks to all who participated. If you have any suggestions as to when the last game should be please let me know.

Greenbelt Conservancy Calendar Last month we had Chris Hellstrom come talk to us (thanks to Janice Ellison) about the calendar and becoming members of the Greenbelt Conservancy. The Rockets have decided on the $125 Sponsor Level which is on the side of each month.

BTC Grand Finale
We need volunteers to work the finish line for this race. The race is Saturday, Sept 10th in Coney Island. Please consider helping the team out if you are not running the race. Remember all money from timing this year is going to our Scholarship Fund.

Halloween Race
There will be a meeting to get the Halloween race going. Anyone interested in joining the race commitee to help out should attend. The meeting will be Tuesday, August 9th at the CSI Track bleachers at 6pm.

Rocket Scholarship
We have already decided to put 50/50 money, timing money, proceeds from the Halloween race, and 10% of our year end account into the scholarship. These are thing we already do. We need to implement other fundraising to help out the scholarship. The 1st year will probably not be that successful for fundraising but we will learn as the years go by. Hopefully the scholarship (in a few years) will be able to florish off of fundraising alone. Ideas in the making are raffle tickets (or a super raffle), a fundraising party, and a bowling fundraiser. We welcome any other fundraising ideas!

Special Shout Out
To member Gary Aneis who has lost over 200 lbs. You can follow Gary's progress at www.500lbs2marathon.com He is very inspirational!

July's Runner of the Month
Antonio Massa is the Runner of the Month for July. He was the 1st Rocket finisher at 3 different races. The Arielle Newman 5 miler he placed 19th overall with a time of 30:17.
He placed 1st in his age group and led the men's master team to 2nd place. At the Boilermaker in Utica Antonio ran 60:49 for the 15K.
He was 13th in his age group out of 638 45-49 year olds. Last but not least, he ran 1:26:18 for the Queens Half Marathon which was good for 5th in his age group.
Great job Antonio!
The next meeting will be not be the 1st Monday of the month due to Labor Day. I do not yet have a date but I will send another email when I do have a date. It will also be posted on our website. I hope to see you there!

- Scotland Run - 10K - Central Park - full
Sunday, April 17th - City Parks Foundation Run for the Parks - 4m - Central Park
Saturday, April 23rd - SIAC Scholarship Trail Race - Brielle Ave Rec Center - 11am

Saturday, April 30th - High Rock Challenge
Thursday, May 5th - SITRAC Fundraiser and Triple Crown Awards Dinner - Hilton

**** Please make sure to write Richmond Rockets for team name in the races.

Workouts
Weekly workouts have started and are going well. They take place at the CSI Track on Tuesday evenings. Be warmed up and ready to start the workout at 7pm.
Sweats
Sweatshirts are in. And the long sleeves will be arriving soon. If you ordered a sweatshirt, I have put the size you ordered aside. They cost $25. Let me know when you are around for me to give it to you. Workouts on Tuesdays are good for me. If you are going to be at Scott's Race, I can bring them there as well. If you are interested in purchasing a sweatshirt (and did not pre-order it), we did buy extras so let me know that you are interested.

Trail Clean Up
Janice Ellison is an official trail maintainer. She is in charge of maintaining a mile of trail in the Greenbelt and is asking the Rockets to chip in. Look for an email on when and where the 1st clean up will be. If we want to run on well kept trails, we need to do our part to keep them in good shape. Thank you in advance for helping with this.

Doreen's Race Application
The appplication can be found on our website ( will be uploaded by April 9th here) and is attached to emails that were sent out.

March's Runner of the Month
March's runner of the month is Tom Bednarczyk
. Tom has been attending the Tuesday night workouts and is steadily improving and learning how to train and race. He ran a very good 21:22 for the St. Patty's Day 5K which was good for 2nd place in his age group. Good Job Tom!

The next meeting will be Monday, May 2nd at 8pm at the Manor House. I hope to see you there.

Trish

March 2011 Newsletter

Hello Richmond Rockets ,

Here comes Spring. Not too many races this month. If you wanted to race, I hoped you signed up early (see below). Good thing we are starting workouts to keep the speed!

Upcoming Races
Sat, March 19 - SIAC St Patty's Day 5K - Wolfe's Pond Park
Sun, March 20 - NYC Half Marathon (event is full)
Sun, March 27 - NY Colon Cancer Challenge (event is full)
Sun, April 3 - More Women's Half Marathon (event is full)
Workouts
Tuesday's at CSI Track starting 3/15 - BE THERE!
We would like to start the workouts at 7, so you should be warmed up, stretched out and ready to go by then. Anyone who can run a 5K right now can do a workout (at their own pace).

Dues
It is that time of year again. Dues for 2011 has been collected for the past 2 months. Please give or mail your dues ($20 per person or $35 per family) to Diane Greco at 52 Park Pl, SI, NY 10301 if you haven't done so. If you do not pay the dues it will be assumed that you no longer want to be part of the club and you will be removed from our roster. Anyone receiving free membership (students and military) should email Diane at runmomds@aol.com to let her know you are still a member of the club or it will be assumed you no longer want to be part of the club and you will be removed from our roster.

Guest Speaker
Tom Hogan of SIAC came to speak about 3 things:
1. An upcoming trail race on Saturday, April 23rd to benefit the SIAC scholarship.
2. The NCAA pool to benefit the SIAC scholarship.
3. He is looking for people to learn FAT (fully automatic timing) and become trained in it for the CYO meets. The CYO will pay minimally for the meets. However, once the indoor track is built (and yes it is being built- groundbreaking was over the summer) better paying jobs will be available to you on the Island. Please let me know if you are interested and I will forward your name to him.

Runners of the Month
Noone was nominated for the runner of the month for February so I took it upon myself to acknowledge 3 members. The Runners of the Month for February are Patrick Young, John Tonnessen, and Maggie McCauley. All of them participated in 3 races during the month of February. Great job. They all ran the NYRR Gridiron, the Cherry Tree 10 miler, and the Al Gordon Classic.

The next meeting will be Monday, April 4th. I hope to see you there.

Trish

December Newsletter
and all Past newsletter since Jan 2010 below

Hello Rockets,
Happy Holidays to All. Stay warm on your runs - it's getting cold out there. And Congrats to all who ran the NYC Marathon and Philly Marathon last month.

Upcoming Races
Sat, Dec 11 - NYRR Jingle Bell Jog - 4 miles - Prospect Park
Sun, Dec 12 - NYRR Pete McArdle Cross Country Classic - 15K - Van Cortlandt Park
Sun, Dec 19 - NYRR Ted Corbitt 15K - Central Park
Sun, Dec 19 - Special Olympics Jingle Bell Run
Fri, Dec 31 - NYRR Emerald Nuts Midnight Run - 4 miles - Central Park
Sat, Jan 1 - SIAC Sober Up Run - 3 miles - Clove Lakes

Elections
No elections were held. There was only 1 nomination for each officer and captain. People need to start stepping up and get more involved in the club. In order to do the best we can and offer the best to new members, we need fresh ideas. Anyone who attends the meetings should look to be an officer or captain at some point. It's really not that difficult or time consuming. Take it from someone who has been the Treasurer and President.

The officers are
Patricia Mulligan - President
Brigid McGinley - Vice-President
Darlene Vigliotti - Secretary
Diane Scrimenti-Greco - Treasurer

The captains are :
Lisa Shammas - Women's Open
Maria Gelabert - Women's Masters
Adam Colasuonno - Men's Open
John Gonzalez - Men's Masters

Dues
It's that time of year again. Please give or send your $20 yearly dues to Diane. Her address is 52 Park Place, SI, NY 10301. Any new members who have paid in October, November, or December are set for 2011.

Ordering
Not many people seemed interested in the Asics running suit. I think it would be nice. Jeff Benjamin said we could get a sample to look at. I'll try to get it for the next meeting. If you want to look it up online it is the Asics Caldera. It can be a jacket and pants or just a jacket. The full suit would probably be around $90. I'm throwing it out there again. Anyone interested? Last month I only got 1 response.

Last call for sweatshirts and long-sleeves
Sweatshirt - I have Kristin Finn, John G, Kathy and Scott, Trish, Kerri, and Brigid
I need a size for Kristin!
Long-sleeve - Kristin, Kathy and Scott, Maria G.
Again need a size for Kristin.

Party Time
We are looking to have the Annual Richmond Rockets Party on Saturday, Jan 15th. The date is not set yet. We have to check with the Manor House. More details will follow from Corinne.

Runner of the Month
Adam Colasuonno ran the NYC Marathon in an awesome 3:21:01 (averaging 7:41 per mile). While training for the marathon, he ran a great time of 1:28:48 for the SI Half. In the 18 mile Marathon Tune Up his time was 2:18:18 - also 7:41 pace. He has greatly improved his times this year. Congrats Adam!

The next meeting will be held Monday, Jan 3rd at the Manor House at 8pm. I hope to see you there to celebrate the beginning of another great year for the Rockets.

Trish

Halloween Race
The Halloween Race was a great success. Big thanks to all who helped out - especially Joe Busso who was there extra early to check out the course and do the scoring. What a nice surprise to have NY1 there to promote the event!

NYC Marathon
Good luck to all running this Sunday. Very nice write ups in the Advance on members Nancy Wagner-Wetzel and Courtney Nash-Betsais. Keep looking for more Rockets in the Advance and possible more press on NY1. Big good luck to those running the Philly Marathon later in the month as well.

Apparel
Please respond back to me if you are interested in buying a sweatshirt or long sleeve and include your size. Jeff Benjamin found a great deal for an Asics Running Suit. It is the Asics Caldera Jacket and Pants if you want to look it up. If we order 35 of them we can get it for about $85 (35% off the reg price). It would be Black and White. It is wind and water resistant and would be great for the upcoming winter months. Please email me if you are interested in this and we can see if we can get up to 35.

Elections
Nominations were made at the meeting Monday night. The following nominations were made:
For President - Trish Mulligan
For Vice President - Brigid McGinley
For Secretary - Darlene Vigliotti
For Treasurer - Diane Greco
For Open Captains - Lisa Shammas and Adam Colasuonno
For Master Captains - Maria Gelabert, John Chan and John Gonzalez

I apologize if I left anyone out. I didn't write this down and am going by memory, Looks like the only hot race is the Masters Male Captain - John vs John. Voting will take place at the December meeting. Please consider running for an officer position or captain. The more people involved, the better the club will be!

October Runner of the Month
There were so many excellent races in October, but one person stands out the most and that is Amy Eshleman . Oddly enough, Amy is also featured in the Photo of the Month on the Richmond Rocket Website.
The photo was taken at the SI Half where Amy ran a PR of 1:53:34. Amy also ran the 1/2 in 1:55:45 at Grete's Great Gallop the week before. In the past year, Amy has taken 5 min off her half- marathon time.
Great Job AMY!

The next meeting is 12/6. I hope to see you there.

Trish

August Newsletter

Hello Rockets,
Well July was the 2nd hottest month ever in NYC and we all survived! I'm sure we are all looking forward to a cooler (just a little cooler) August.

Ladder 5 & SI Indoor Track Groundbreaking
Thanks to all you volunteered at the Ladder 5 Race. It was a great success. And thanks to all who attended the very nice but very HOT Groundbreaking for the Indoor Track.

Guest Speakers
Donate to Project Homefront through the Girl Scouts at Tommy's Run 8/12 Two of our young club members, Amanda and Brianna Benjamin, are completing their Girl Scouts Silver Award Project by collecting items for Project Homefront to be sent overseas to our troops. If you donate 1 item, you receive free entry into the Thursday night run. See www.siprojecthomefront.org for items to donate (cash cannot be accepted by the Girl Scouts). Items are listed under Care Package.

Have a Heart 5k
Anthony DiMaggio came to promote this race on October 3rd. The entry is on sirunning.com. All proceeds from the race help fellow Staten Islanders with their recovery from heart and heart-related illnesses.

July's Runner of the Month
A unanimous decision was made at the meeting for Dario Endozo to be July's Runner of the Month. After all he did complete the Lake Placid Ironman with a time of 12:39:20. Amazing! He swam 2.4 miles in 1:20:38, biked 112 miles in 6:20:09, ran a marathon in 4:35:43. Congratulations Dario. This is an incredible accomplishment.

Singlets
The men's singlets are in! If you gave Diane your name and size, you can get them whenever. I will be at some of Tommy's Thursday night runs.
Shoot me an email so I know to bring them. (This is my email address (phatricia@aol.com)- do not email me at richmondrockets.com)
note: this has been since corrected and the proper email is now fixed on the contact links

Website
Our website has been maintained by Steve Woitkowski for the past several years. Steve is no longer able to do this and at this point, I would like to thank him for all of his work on behalf of the club. Thank you Steve. And thank you to John Chan who is taking it over.

July Newsletter

Hello Rockets,
Good Job to those of us who did well in the Triple Crown!

Ladder 5
The Rockets will be doing the timing for the Ladder 5 Race. If you are able to come and help out, it is greatly appreciated. Be at Wolfes Pond Park by 9am. There is always alot of beer to be drank afterwards!

SI Indoor Track Groundbreaking
FINALLY!!! As a former HS runner on SI and current Coach, nothing is better than this. Anyone who has made trips to the Armory as a runner, or parent of a runner, knows that this is HUGE! Every runner from SI will benefit from this. This is a free event. If you are able to, please show your support on Wednesday July 21st at 11am on Father Capodanno (next to South Beach Psych Hospital). Just think, track workouts won't have to wait til mid March to begin!

Reminder
I started the runner of the month last month and put a team member (John Gonzalez) in the spotlight for their performances in the newsletter. Please feel free to nominate anyone or yourself. You can email a nomination to me anytime during any given month or give me a nomination at the meeting. All nominations for a month should be given in by the meeting.

June's Runner of the Month
You have definitely seen this woman at a race this past month because she has been everywhere.
Nancy Wagner-Wetzel is the June Runner of the Month. Nancy ran Doreen's Run (26:57 for 5k on 6/12), Jeff's Run (28:31 for 5k on 6/20), Wall St Run (29:43 for 3 miles on 6/24), NY Lesbian and Gay Pride Run (48:58 for 5 miles on 6/26), and Cosme's Run (couldn't find those results online 5k on 6/27). She placed in her age group at both Jeff's Run and Cosme's Run. And I'm pretty sure she ran Tommy's fun run a couple of times. Great job Nancy!

Hello Rockets,
Hope this newsletter find you all well.  Here is what went on at the meeting:

***We are looking to take a team photo at Doreen's Race.  Please wear your singlet or bring your Richmond Rockets t-shirt for the picture.

Congrats to all who ran well in May! (especially the Ragnar Relay)

I am going to start a runner of the month and put a team member in the spotlight for their performances in the newsletter.  Please feel free to nominate anyone or yourself.  You can email a nomination to me anytime during any given month or give me a nomination at the meeting.  All nominations for a month should be given in by the meeting.

    May's Runner of the Month
None other than our Open Male Captain, John Gonzalez.  John started the month strong with a fine showing at the Alzheimers Run, running 21:17 for 3 miles.  He also ran 1:49:32 for the Brooklyn Half Marathon.  He capped off his fine month of running with a 29:25 for the SI Advance Memorial Day Run (4 miles).  He was 2nd in the clydesdale category.  Good job John!

Workouts
There will be no workouts on Tuesday nights in June.  Many of us are racing every weekend.  If you are looking for a mid week workout try Tommy's Fun Run on Tuesday at Fort Hamilton or Thursday at Clove Lakes.

Singlets .
Will be in soon.  They are ordered and are currently being printed.

Scoring.
Many Rockets have been practicing working a finish line and scoring at Tommy's Fun Runs.  Darlene Vigliotti and Nancy Wagner-Wetzel are becoming experts!

 Last Month's Speakers .
1) Last month Phil McCarthy came and spoke to us about sponsoring him in the Badwater Race in Death Valley.  All proceeds go to Project Hospitality.  We agreed at the meeting to sponsor Phil $100.

2)  Bob Orazem came and spoke about SI Trac and it's fundraiser.  Groundbreaking for the indoor track should be within the next few weeks.  I will send an email when I know the date.  If you are able to make the ceremony, your support is greatly appreciated.  Just think, track workouts won't have to wait til mid March to begin!

The next meeting is Monday 7/5.  I hope to see you there.  Good luck in all of your runnnig this month.

Hello Rockets,.
Hope all is well for you.  Here is what went on at the meeting on Monday.  Happy Mother's Day to all you moms!

Guest Speakers.
Bob Orazem came to talk to the club about the upcoming fundraiser for SITrac.  It is Thursday, May 6th at Moore Catholic HS.  It is $50 a ticket if you buy it in advance and $60 at the door.  It includes dinner and drinks.  Groudbreaking for the Indoor Track is June 2010 and it is expected to be complete for the winter of 2012-2013.  Please support this fundraiser if you are able to.  More info and registration info is available on the Rocket website and the SI Trac website.  Having an indoor track on Staten Island is an awesome thing for the Staten Island running community!

Linda Steinman, from Project Hospitality, and Phil McCarthy, an ultra-marathoner came to tell us about Phil's Badwater race in July through Death Valley.  He is running for Project Hospitality to give back to the Staten Island community.  He has a blog on the Project Hospitality website.  Anyone wishing to sponsor him can go to www.projecthospitality.org and all proceeds go to project hospitality.  We as a team will discuss what to give at the next meeting in June.

Tommy Hart's Summer Speed runs start Tuesday 5/4 and are every Tuesday at Fort Hamilton (Brooklyn) and every Thursday at Clove Lakes.  Both races start at 7 and the cost is $3.

***Remember to write Richmond Rockets for the Team Name

Congratulations to all who ran well in the month of April!

March 2010

Hello Rockets,

Welcome to March!  Hopefully the snow is over and just a distant (not really so distant) memory. Here is what was discussed at the meeting:

  Newletter and Dues .
Thank you to all who have paid their dues. If you have not paid your dues, please do so ($20 for a single member, $35 for family membership - application is attached).

Students and military are FREE!
Simply respond to this email and let us know you still want to be part of the Rockets.  If you are a paying member and would like to include your child (who is a student), simply include that on your application and pay the $20 (your child is free).

********************************************************************************* If we receive no response by April 1st, whether it be via email or application, you will be removed from the roster.

Long standing members who paid for 2009 but not yet for 2010 will be exempted from the removal for now.  If you have not paid your dues for 2009 and 2010 and still want to be part of the Rockets, please send in your dues.

Workouts.
Workouts will start Tuesday 3/16 at the CSI track at 7pm and continue to be held on Tuesdays at 7pm at CSI.  Hopefully all the snow will be gone by then.  If not I will send out an email the day before and we will measure out a workout in Clove Lakes Park.

Ordering Singlets, Long Sleeves, and Sweatshirts.
At the February meeting, there was some interest shown in ordering these tops.  The response was poor (5 singlets, 1 long sleeve, 2 sweatshirts).  If you are interested in ordering any of these, please let me know so we can place 1 order for the year.  You can respond back to this email to let me know.

SIAC Scholarship and NCAA Pool.
Tom Hogan came to the meeting to discuss the Forest Ave Mile and an NCAA Pool to benefit the SIAC Scholarship to HS runners on Staten Island.  The cost is $50 a box and it is only for the final game.  There are 4 chances to win - final score, final score reversed, half-time score, and half-time score reversed.   You can email tommhogan@aol.com by April 1st if you are interested in purchasing a box.

Richmond Rockets Scoring Races.
After much discussion (and several volunteers willing to learn how to score and score races), we have decided to have a meeting which Joe Busso will lead on how to score a race using our computer system.  The meeting will be at 7pm on April 5th at the Manor House (before our monthly meeting).  Those you signed up are Darlene Vigliotti, Kenny Pickell, Patricia Mulligan, Maria Civille, John Chan, John Britz, Amy Eshleman, Maria Gelabert, Nancy Wagner-Wetzel, Scott Sugarman, John Gonzalez, Jason Hart, John Leide, Lisa Shammas.
Thank you to all you have volunteered.  If anyone else is interested, please come to the meeting.  This will create some extra money for the club.  Maybe we will be able to give scholarships similar to SIAC's in future years.

  Richmond Rocket Website.
If you would like your name included on the website for any race, please email your captain and they will email Steve Woitkowski (our website coordinator).  Include the name of the race, the distance, and your time.  Steve does a great job getting the Staten Island races on our website and the major NYRR races, but for the smaller races we need a better system in place (hopefully this is it!).

The captains and their email addresses are:

Brigid Howley-McGinley (Open Female)-    brigidhowley@aol.com
John Gonzalez              (Open Male)   -     johnhomer44@yahoo.com
John Chan                    (Masters Male) -   genesis69@si.rr.com
Maria Gelabert         (Masters Female)  -   mgelabert@si.rr.com

Unreachable Members.
Some of our members are I have been unable to contact due to no email address on the application or an incorrect/full email address.  If you see any of these members, please ask them to contact me.   Thank you in advance for help with this. Tom Bednarczyk, Debbie Brehm, Beth Johanning-Hayes, Scott LaPiedra, Michael Marinaro, Vincent Cazzetta, Dom DelPrete, Joseph Del Sole, Robin Dolan, Marty Grube, Steve Urcinoli, John Yordt, Robyn Hanafee, Coleen Jantz, Mike Chiappone, Barbara Byrne, Christy Smith, Mike Carullo, The Dormans, Mary Karasinski, Bozena Niebrzydowski, Terrance O'Brien.

The next meeting will be Monday, April 5th.  Hopefully I'll see some of you at the workouts before then.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns or ideas at any time.

What else went on at the Meeting:
- Unfortunately, the SI Running Community lost another fine runner.  Danny Kelley was struck by a car while doing what he loved most on Tuesday, January 5th and succumber to his injuries on Saturday, January 9th.  We voted to send a donation of $100 to the Luke M. Parlatore Foundation in Danny Kelley's name (in lieu of sending flowers) and also the proceeds from the meeting's 50/50.  In total we are sending $175 to the foundation.

If you would like to participate and this day/time/location is not good, please let me know and we can try to change it.

                           - If you know any unattached runners (especially open males and females), invite them to join the Richmond Rockets.  It is hard to recruit now since there aren't many races, the best place is really in the park on a run.
-  Anyone who would like to volunteer at the Cold Feat race, should be at the Latourette Golf Course Club house at 8am on race day (Feb 20th)
-  Lastly, if you are interested in purchasing a Richmond Rockets singlet, long-sleeve t-shirt, or sweatshirt, please reply back to this email.  We can put an order in, if enough people are interested.

I hope to see you at the next meeting on March 1st at the Manor House.

Trish

Jan 2010

Hello Richmond Rockets,

One of the first things I wanted to do as president is bring back the monthly newsletter (via email).  It is going to start off very basic.  It will include what was discussed at the meeting, past races, upcoming races, and anything else that is going on with the Rockets and the Staten Island running community.  It's main purpose is to keep everyone informed since not everyone can make the monthly meetings.  Hopefully it will progress into the old newsletter with some articles and fun stuff (I know many of us looked forward to seeing what the next newsletter revealed).

Something else I find very important is recruiting new members (especially for the open teams).  We will continue to give free membership to students (college, high school, and younger) and military.  This should help a bit, but I am looking to somehow reach out to the twenty and thirty somethings as well.  I think starting track workouts again may help with this.

The lottery for the NYC Half Marathon closes Tuesday, Jan 5th at 11:59pm

Events:.
The Richmond Rockets Cocktail Part 2010 is Saturday, Jan 16th at the Manor House from 8-12.  The cost is $35 per person and it includes 4 hours of open bar, 3 hours of pasta station, antipasto board, passed hors d'ouvres and a DJ.  Please send money to Corrine Driscoll   270 Delafield Ave, S.I., NY 10310  by Jan 7th

Also discussed at the meeting:.
- Club ByLaws and changes.  Attached you will find the Club ByLaws and the proposed changes.  Changes will be voted on by the club at the February meeting.  -Also attached is a New Club Membership Application.  Please fill one out so we will have all updated information and send in your dues.  If you are no longer interested in being a member of the Richmond Rockets, please respond back to this email indicating this and I will remove you from the roster and email list.  -We once again decided to sponsor 2 events at the Staten Island HS Indoor Track and Field Championship (one event in memory of Doreen Scrimenti and one event in memory of Tom Carroll). -We talked about using our timing equipment at some local races and the club being paid for these services to acquire some extra money with the hopes offering scholarships.  We do need volunteers who know what they are doing for this to work.  -A committee was formed to start a race in the Greenbelt for February 20th.  This was brought to Joe Busso by Matt LeBow.  The committee is meeting at 7 at the Manor House on Wednesday, Jan 6th to get this race going.

We welcome new member Toby and the new officers.

Patricia Mulligan - President
Kenny Pickell - Vice President
Darlene Vigliotti - Secretary
Diane Greco - Treasurer

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas.  I hope to see you at our next meeting on Monday, February 1st at 8pm at the Manor House.

Trish
